- Thanks for the comments, folks (especially the one comparing me to Randall in Clerks -- best compliment I've ever rec'd). Excellent, fair, honest note by Prettybird about giving feedback on things he/she doesn't like as well. Good points in that post, too -- I agree completely about climbing being a selfish pursuit. It really is an utterly worthless pursuit to the world, and matters only to those of us who love it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course, as most everything most people do is selfish, including the things regularly hailed as unselfish, like even having children -- this is sure to touch a nerve, I know, but it's a fine example that selfish needn't be "bad," as the simple fact is that people have kids for one reason and one reason only: because they want to. The very definition of selfishness. And then it transitions into something more, but it's borne (born...) of selfishness. We're certainly not in danger of extinction from underpopulation; but I digress -- just to say that selfishness permeates most everything. Agreed, too, that we should accept the selfish passions of others as we pursue our own. I wish I didn't make judgments against anyone else, ever. I'm super impressed by anyone who never makes judgments against others -- even in their own head (be honest now...). Add to it someone you already butt heads with fully ripping on your dead friend/hero (the next day, no less), and maybe it's at least understandable, even if you don't like it.
I'd have been wiser to address this in advance, though. As Fitz and I recently discussed, we should've had a disclaimer line in there. It'd go something like this: "...I suspect that I'm far from alone in making mental judgments about others. Sometimes it takes a trigger to bring them out, and her ripping on Alex -- my hero, now dead -- did it. And then, for better or worse, some of us are writers and share our stories, including the honest times where we don't behave quite as well as maybe we should."
Of course my judging h - I guess I would have to agree with the fact that this was one of the most condescending and pretentious shorts I have ever heard. Climbing is, essentially, a selfish pursuit. We climb because we love to do it, not because it makes the world a better place (at least not directly). Those who shop do it because they love it (I assume) not because they\'re trying to make the world a better place (although, with economic turmoil, they are likely doing their part).
I am not saying anything about Kelly personally - I do not know the guy - but I am saying that I was disappointed with this episode. I think it took away the pure passion for the act of climbing and instead placed the climber in a one up position that somehow made him wiser, better, smarter... more passionate.
I support following your dream - following your passion. I just don\'t support the idea that someone would step on someone else just to elevate themselves.
Fitz, keep up the great work. I write this because I so enjoy the dirtbag diaries and love hearing every episode. To not give feedback on something I found mildly disappointing seems like tipping a waiter 20% regardless of their actual service - a beautiful thing that improves nothing. - This piece was one of the funniest things I\'ve heard in a long time. Absolutely hilarious. Please have Kelly back to read anything...insurance contracts....billion dollar bank bailout legislation...whatever.
After listening to it, I had to fire up Google and make sure that Kelly didn\'t play Randall in the movie \"Clerks\". - Thank you for your thoughtful response, Fitz...you provide a context for the short that I didn't think about. Make no mistake, you and the gang are doing a terrific job, and Kelly is not a bad writer, and I'm sure a good person...perhaps it was just the rawness of the short that produced my response. Diversity in opinion and thought is a good thing....i'm glad you're not afraid to air it.
It is harsh, but I also understood where Kelly was coming from -- in a really personal way. In my writing life there have been two, very distinct moments that have defined my writing path. One is very positive -- The Diaries. The other experience is very negative one, which I would never want to relive, but have also come to see its importance in hardening my resolve.
At the beginning of my career, there was a new hot magazine with a big shot editor. He offered me a story. A big break. I worked my tail off and did some good writing. I put the research expenses on a credit card. The editor was quite pleased with the first draft and we seemed to get along. I went through a month of edits with the staff. Three days before, the final deadline I get on a conference call with the entire editorial staff. As far as I knew everything was okay, and then he just starts yelling at me. He starts swearing at me. Breaking me down while we are on the conference call. I took it. I took every word of it. Let him swear at me. Let him tell me I had no talent. The other editors didn't say a word. I even apologized. Then he got off the phone and instead of letting me take the story and sell it somewhere else, he went and submarined it at another magazine. He then called the photographer and the person I profiled and offered to do the story with another writer of worthy caliber. It was the single most sadistic thing anyone has done to me. I still don't completely understand it.
The photographer, James Q Martin, turned down the editor's offer, pulled his photos and stuck with me (ultimately, he took a loss). It became the first of many great stories and adventures we've worked on. When Becca and I got married, James was the one there taking the pictures. Becca paid my credit card bill and from then on, we both realized that we were a team, that we could both be successful in our individual careers if we had each other's backs. I learned a couple of things I had previously only believed in theoretically -- no stor- True, the short was a bit funny, but I didn\'t find the short as refreshing as others. In fact, I was a bit annoyed and found Kelly to be pretentious. Let me explain:
The dirtbag diaries has been great at portraying how a simple, yet passionate life around the outdoors and the environment can bring great joy and pleasure to one\'s life. Yet, it has done so without being mean spirited or demeaning to those who might differ with this outlook, or, say practice.
Perhaps not purposely, but this short implied that anything less than Kelly\'s ideal persona - or lack of attachment to materialism - is wrong. In \'short\', I didn\'t find this piece to be in the spirit of what Fitz has created.
Rave on.
