In the Year of Big Ideas, my childhood friend Brad laid it out – he was going to climb El Cap in 2008. Never mind that he had minimal climbing experience or had never even been to Yosemite. We schemed and scheduled “vacation.” We planned and tried to convince others to join us, but in the end, Brad and I were on our own to wrestle with one very big – arguably bad – idea. We had four days to pull it off. We would have to climb faster than we could manufacture excuses.

A third of the way through 2008, where are you in your year of big ideas? We’d love to hear from you. Leave a comment and a little inspiration. What have you ticked off the list? What’s left?

  • I\'ve been a huge fan of Dirtbag Diaries for a while and I remember reading this short just before I got rid of my apartment, quit my job, sold my car and embarked on my through hike of the Appalachian Trail. I have just arrived in central virginia and have a chance to touch base and it is so awesome to read what everyone\'s doing! I\'m happy to say the through hike is kicking ass- I\'ve been living on the trail for 110 days, have walked over 1400 miles and have taken in so many beautiful places and people along the way. It\'s hard to believe in a month and a half I\'ll have the entire 2,176 miles complete. Although I\'m so looking forward to trying to fit my flat feet back in my climbing shoes and finally get on a snowboard again I\'m loving living in the moment in the woods everyday...next on the list- PCT?
Keep on living these inspiring lives!!

  • I had to put climbing aside for a while to accomplish my goal, but it was worth it. I spent 75 days living with farmers in Brazil, within an organization that fights for the land. I participated in political meetings, learned portuguese, and lived in their house for the whole time. I wanted to do something like that since I was about 14, I\'m now 19 and real happy to have done it. I can now go back to pushing my climbing limits knowing limits are just something that needs to be removed.

  • I listened to your last podcast while I am packing to move back to Colorado after seven years in Europe. The last five in flat lands; the Netherlands. This summer my goal is become the Rocky Mountain girl I miss so dearly. To climb 14er\'s, kayak Colorado rivers, and soak in those blue skies and fresh air. However first I need to finish backing by Monday. Arggg

  • My main goal this year was crushed. A snow safety job in New Zealand. But that's OK, or least it seems so. The promise of ski touring in Argentina, or alpine pushes in Europe keeps the dream alive. Keep up the strong work...

  • heck yeah. It sounds like people are charging. My list is going along steadily. Ticked my 30 days of skiing. Now if I could only get that \"work less, play more\" goal dialed.

  • Clearwater Creek. Nothing especially difficult or complicated, just a classic stretch of river (arguably, the best piece of whitewater in Whatcom County) that has eluded me since moving to Seattle. No longer as of last Thursday, with three more laps on Saturday!

  • this weekend we get to see if the bike riding around town made any difference. 3 days in central Utah self supported.

  • I completed my first triathlon. It was a blur; I remeber it as an hour of exertion, but the best thing i\'ve done all year.

  • Hi,

I am a guy that started climbing too late in life to really be any good at it, but I love it and I love Yosemite. Your short story was great and you really hit it when you said that Yosemite makes you turn off then turn back on again. I manage to slip away to Yosemite a few times a year where I turn off and turn back on again - and I climb.

Great job you won over another listener.
